Candidates and Euthanasia/Disabilities [Sep. 2nd, 2008|04:47 pm]
United States Disability Community News

Someone told me today that Obama supported a bill that allowed babies born live from abortions to be euthanized. Does anyone know if this is true? I've been looking around but I can't find either candidates' views about abortion when it concerns disabilities and euthanasia put consicely.

Also, I created a group for Disability History if anyone is interested.

Thanks a lot!

That's not exactly true, but I can see how the facts of the situation could easily get glossed into that over multiple tellings.

Obama did vote against a state version of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act that had already passed in the Senate, which prohibits the active or passive euthanasia of any viable infant born accidentally from abortions, but according to his campaign website, his reasoning had more to do with concerns about Roe v. Wade and the existence of laws that were supposed to already be protecting those infants than financial concerns.

The closest I've heard any candidate come to saying that people with disabilities cost too much is McCain arguing against the Community Choice Act because he thinks it would be too expensive.

Thank you so much. That clarifies the situation.
